The origins of Azerbaijani Mugham can be traced back to the medieval period, when it was influenced by Persian and Turkish classical music traditions. Over time, Mugham developed into a distinct form with its own unique characteristics, including a modal system based on a series of scales called maqams, intricate ornamentation, and a strong emphasis on improvisation.

Today, Azerbaijani Mugham is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and is an important part of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage. It continues to be performed in various settings, including concerts, festivals, and weddings, and has been adapted to contemporary styles and genres.
