Looking for the best cities to visit in Azerbaijan? These ten destinations offer different ways to experience the country, from Baku’s Old City and Sheki’s palace to tea country around Lankaran and the landscapes of Nakhchivan.
Choose a region, not a checklist. Some highlights lie in nearby villages or districts rather than in the city itself. Suggested stays below are planning estimates, excluding most intercity travel.

1. Baku
Old City, contemporary architecture and markets · Suggested stay: 2–3 days
Start in Icheri Sheher, the walled Old City, then contrast its lanes with the waterfront and modern Baku. The Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs are useful landmarks for planning your walk. Keep a separate stop for Yaşıl Bazar if you enjoy food markets.
Plan your visit: group Old City sights together, leave time for the boulevard and check opening hours before booking museum visits. The market is a separate journey, not part of the Old City.

Historic architecture and a relaxed city walk · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Explore the central streets, Shah Abbas Mosque and Khan Baghi garden, then allow a separate trip for the Imamzadeh complex outside the centre. Ganja makes a useful base for a western Azerbaijan itinerary.
Plan your visit: do not squeeze the city and its surrounding sights into a short walk. Imamzadeh is an active religious site; dress respectfully and follow local guidance on photography.

Khan’s Palace, caravanserais and craftsmanship · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Sheki rewards an overnight stay: explore the historic streets, caravanserai area and Khan’s Palace, then leave time for local sweets and craft shops. The historic centre with the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage property. The eighteenth-century palace is a highlight of the visit.
Look for: colourful shebeke window patterns and painted interiors. Check visitor access and photography rules at the palace before your visit.

Mountain scenery and excursions around town · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Use Gabala as a base for Nohur Lake, Tufandag Mountain Resort and the wider district. Nij village offers a different cultural stop connected with Udi heritage. These places are spread out: they are not all sights within the town centre.
Plan your visit: pick two or three stops and arrange transport between them. Cable-car operation, skiing conditions, equipment hire and tickets depend on the date and weather; check current resort information when planning your budget.

Lahij, Basgal and village culture · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Ismayilli is a starting point for a district rich in village traditions. Lahij is known for copper craftsmanship, Basgal for kelaghayi silk scarves, and Ivanovka for Molokan heritage. Each deserves its own time rather than a hurried photo stop.
Plan your visit: choose a village focus and check the road conditions, especially for mountain journeys. Arrange workshop or household visits in advance.

Ilisu and the north-western foothills · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Combine a look around Gakh with an excursion towards Ilisu. The area is known for mountain landscapes, historic villages and the Ilisu waterfall, also called Ram-Rama. A village excursion needs more planning than a walk around the town.
Plan your visit: ask locally about trail and road conditions before setting out. Choose footwear for the route and allow time to return before dark. Saribash, pictured here, is a separate village in the district.

Mountain Jewish heritage and northern scenery · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Guba is a useful base for the north-east. Explore the town’s historic streets and add Red Village, Qırmızı Qəsəbə, to learn about Mountain Jewish heritage. Trips farther into the mountains require their own transport and time.
Plan your visit: check museum and religious-site access in advance. Red Village is a living community, so ask before photographing people and respect private spaces.

Music heritage and a historic hilltop city · Suggested stay: 1–2 days, subject to access
Shusha is closely associated with Azerbaijan’s musical and literary heritage. Its historic architecture and Jidir Plain make it a distinctive cultural stop. Plan this part of the trip around confirmed access arrangements.
Before booking: the Azerbaijan Tourism Board announcement effective 23 July 2025 allows foreign visitors to travel by private vehicle or with organised groups, subject to the required permits. Consult the official announcement and confirm the current process with your operator or the permit service.
A map pin does not grant access. Follow the authorised route and official instructions; avoid independent detours onto unmarked roads or terrain.

Tea, southern food and green landscapes · Suggested stay: 1–2 days
Lankaran offers a southern contrast to the capital: tea traditions, regional food and access to green landscapes. Combine a city visit with a pre-arranged tea experience or an excursion in the surrounding district.
Plan your visit: tea plantations and nature outings are separate trips; confirm visitor access before arriving. For a longer stay, look into Khanbulan and the Hirkan area. Choose activities for the weather and the time you have.

Mausoleums and a separate regional journey · Suggested stay: 2–3 days plus travel
Nakhchivan is an exclave of Azerbaijan, separated from the country’s main territory. Treat it as a separate part of your itinerary. In the city, start with the Momine Khatun Mausoleum and Khan Palace; Alinja Castle is an excursion outside the city.
Plan your visit: check available flights and transport before reserving accommodation. Do not assume it can be added as a simple road stop from Baku. Alinja involves a substantial climb; choose it according to your fitness and the weather.

Five days: Baku and Sheki
Spend your first two days in Baku. Use day three for the journey to Sheki and an initial walk, day four for the palace and historic streets, and day five for the return journey. Check your actual transport times before fixing this plan.
Seven to nine days: the north-west
After Baku, choose stops around Ismayilli and Gabala, continue to Sheki, and add Gakh if you have enough time. You do not need to visit every village. A slower trip leaves room for crafts, food and changing weather.
Prefer a different focus?
Choose Guba for a northern trip, Lankaran for southern food and tea, or Ganja as a western base. Keep Nakhchivan as a separate segment. Add Shusha only after confirming the required arrangements.
Transport, timing and booking
- Check current departures. Train, bus and flight options can change; confirm the actual service for your date before paying.
- Budget for regional transport. Reaching a town does not automatically get you to a village, waterfall or mountain resort.
- Check mountain conditions. Weather affects roads, walking routes and cable cars. Leave flexibility in your itinerary.
- Confirm access to individual sights. Museum hours, religious-site visits and organised experiences need their own checks.
- Use maps as a starting point. The links open city searches, not verified walking routes or permission to enter restricted areas.
Frequently asked questions
Which cities should I choose for a first visit?
Baku and Sheki offer a clear contrast between the capital and a historic regional city. Add a third area according to your interests and available travel time.
Can I see all ten places in one week?
That would involve a rushed itinerary and substantial travel. Choose a few destinations in one region, especially when village excursions are part of the trip.
Do Sheki and Shaki mean the same place?
Yes. Both spellings refer to Şəki. Similar alternatives include Guba/Quba and Gakh/Qakh.
Is Nakhchivan part of the same road trip?
It is geographically separate from mainland Azerbaijan. Check transport and any cross-border requirements before considering a land journey; plan it as a separate segment.
Can foreign visitors travel to Shusha?
The official tourism announcement provides for visits with the necessary permits. Confirm the current procedure and approved travel arrangements before departure.
